Chapter Ten

Yet again, Mia had to spend some considerable time persuading Lori to get on the plane to Texas – only this time, she didn't have the safety net of a few days; she only had a few hours.

She had changed into her nightdress the minute she got home, and put the jewels away. Franklin had put Garrick to bed, in the blue room, so that he wouldn't disturb Mia, tossing and turning in the night. Then Franklin said a prolonged good night to Lori on the doorstep while Mia went into the kitchen and put the kettle on.

Lori was looking anxious when she finally joined Mia.

'I can still cancel, darling,' she said. 'If you need to talk things through, I can stay. I'm worried about what you said in the pub.'

Mia shook her head. 'Forget what I said in the pub. I am sure of everything. Well, of most things. I'm sure I'm happy. I'm sure I want to be engaged, even though my fiancé appears to be snoring his head off and as drunk as a skunk. Do skunks get drunk? Anyway. I'll be fine and I really want you to go. Franklin will be back here to pick you up in just a few short hours. Do we really have to spend this time, arguing?'

Lori frowned. 'We're not arguing, darling. I'm simply concerned about you.'

'And I've told you repeatedly, there's nothing to be concerned about.' Mia sighed. 'I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap. I think I'm just tired.'

Lori smiled. 'I understand, darling. You've had a lot on your plate over the last few months. You sit down. I'll make the tea.'

Mia gave Lori a hug before slumping onto a chair, and when the kettle boiled a second or two later, Lori made some tea.

'What were you talking with Jet about?' She placed the teapot on a trivet on the table and grabbed two cups. 'He looked rather angry when he walked away and, I have to say this, Mia, you seemed very upset.' She looked Mia in the eye. 'Is there something you're not telling me as far as Jet's concerned? He seems a perfectly pleasant man, and he's definitely been good to Franklin, and of course, to me by saying we can stay in the cottage on his farm, but I've heard a few rumours about him. He hasn't tried anything on with you, has he?'

'If only.' Mia stared at the teapot.

'What did you say?'

Mia shot a look at Lori. 'Er. If only people would stop thinking the worst of Jet, perhaps he would stop behaving as they expect him to.'

Lori frowned. 'I'm not sure I follow that, darling.'

'What did Dad used to say? Tell a dog enough times that it's a bad dog, and it'll be a bad dog. Tell it that it's a good dog, stroke it, give it love and food and treats and it'll love you, watch over you and stay by your side for the rest of its life.'

Lori poured the tea.
